More than 270 runners and walkers of all ages turned out for the 35th annual Sullivan 5K Run/Walk Saturday, Aug. 24, at Washington Park in Oak Bluffs.
Hosted by Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and race founder Dr. Louis Sullivan, the activities began with a Kids Dash for various age groups.
Dr. Sullivan, the former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services from 1989-1992, spoke to the crowd pre-race about founding the event on the Island to promote a healthy lifestyle. The first run/walk was held in 1989.
“We are so fortunate to have forged this partnership with Dr. Louis Sullivan and the Sullivan 5K over the past 35 years,” said Denise Schepici, president of Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. “It’s so wonderful seeing so many people come out on a beautiful Saturday morning to an event that promotes health and fitness through exercise.”
Volunteers directed runners and walkers along the route, including the challenging East Chop Drive up to the lighthouse, and manned two water stops on the course. Volunteers also assisted with race registration, handing out Sullivan 5K T-shirts, and providing a Rehab & Wellness Stretch Tent for before and after the race.
“We are so fortunate to have so many hospital employees who help with this race in so many ways – as sponsors, as volunteers, and as participants,” said George Brennan, Manager of Development, and race coordinator. “The Sullivan 5K is a great demonstration of the hospital leading by example by organizing a family-friendly event that focuses on health and fitness.”
Proceeds from the event will be used for the hospital’s Housing for Healthcare initiative, which will make much-needed housing available to healthcare workers on the Island.
“We appreciate the many generous sponsors and participants who support this great cause and appreciate the funds raised through the years that help us provide outstanding healthcare services to the community,” said Denise.
